Dear Mr. Miller:

I have reviewed the studies done with Oral Ivy and also researched available literature since 1966 to investigate the potential medical risks and benefits. (1,2,3,4) Both the data derived from studies with Oral Ivy as well as other oral Rhus preparations indicates effectiveness as prophylaxis for Rhus poisoning.

Regarding safety, there are no indications of adverse effects from the preparation contained in Oral Ivy when used as a prophylactic treatment. The risks of serious adverse effects, such as anaphylaxis, refer to the parenteral, not oral preparation. No such effects have been reported with any oral preparation. Aggravation of Rhus dermatitis has been reported in response to administration of an oral Rhus preparation, but this occurred only when used as a treatment of already existing dermatitis. The exacerbation was temporarily limited and no permanent adverse effects were reported.

It is also significant that the dosage used in the parenteral and oral preparations that were associated with adverse effects exceeded the dosage recommendations of Oral Ivy many fold. One study of an oral preparation used dosages up to one million times the recommened dose of Oral Ivy.

It is my medical opinion that Oral Ivy can be used for prevention of Rhus dermatitis without any medical qualifications. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of further assistance.
